Military landing sa Spratlys, pinangangambahan

HONG KONG/BEIJING (Reuters) – Ang unang paglapag ng eroplano ng China sa runway ng nilikha nitong isla sa South China Sea ay pinangangambahang susundan ng mga military flight, sinabi ng mga banyagang opisyal at analyst.

Kinumpirma ng mga opisyal ng Chinese foreign ministry noong Sabado ang test flight ng isang civilian plane sa artipisyal na islang itinayo sa Spratlys, ang unang pagkakataon na ginamit ng Beijing ang runway sa lugar.

Naghain ang Vietnam ng pormal na diplomatic protest habang sinabi ni Philippines Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose na susunod na maghahain ng reklamo ang Manila.

“That’s the fear, that China will be able take control of the South China Sea and it will affect the freedom of navigation and freedom of overflight,” sabi ni Jose.

Sa Washington, sinabi ni US State Department spokesman John Kirby na ang paglapag ng eroplano ng China “raises tensions and threatens regional stability.”

Ang runway sa Fiery Cross Reef ay may habang 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) at isa sa tatlong itinatayo ng China sa mga artipisyal na islang nilikha nito sa ibabaw ng pitong reef at atoll sa kapuluan ng Spratlys.

Sinabi ni foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying nitong weekend na ang test flight ay para tiyakin na nakasunod ang runway sa civilian aviation standards at sakop ng “China’s sovereignty”.

Gayunman, hindi na ngayon maiiwasan ang mga military landing sa mga isla, sinabi ni Leszek Buszynski, visiting fellow sa Strategic and Defence Studies Centre ng Australian National University.

“The next step will be, once they’ve tested it with several flights, they will bring down some of their fighter air power – SU-27s and SU-33’s – and they will station them there permanently. That’s what they’re likely to do,” aniya.

Sinabi naman ni Ian Storey, expert sa South China Sea ng ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute sa Singapore, na inaasahan niyang lalala ang mga tensyon sa paggamit ng China sa bagong pasilidad upang ipakita ang lumalalim na kapangyarihan nito sa South China Sea.

“As these facilities become operational, Chinese warnings to both military and civilian aircraft will become routine,” ani Storey.

“These events are a precursor to an ADIZ (Air Defence Identification Zone), or an undeclared but de facto ADIZ, and one has to expect tensions to rise.”
